Freak Accident! Captain ikan in the house.

Last Wednesday was a horror… for the wrong reasons.
How often do you come across a person who hurts her eye… with a taxi receipt?
Perhaps one in a billion?
Yah. That’s me. The unfortunate ‘one in a billion’.
Who could have imagined a tiny piece of paper could have such potent effect?

So the story begins with me waking up late for work (‘coz I worked late the night before) and rushing down to office in a cab. While I was trying to pay the taxi driver with my right hand, and holding my wallet, the taxi receipt and my laptop bag in another, my phone rang in my other bag on my right. Sounds confusing? Yeah… a mini pandemonium broke out when I had to answer that urgent call while ‘playing’ octopus, doing many things at a go.

So since the uncle was trying to take my money from my right hand, I used my left hand to reach across my right for the phone in my bag. Then the freak accident happened.

The sharp edges along the tip of the taxi receipt scratched across my right eyeball - just think along the lines of running your sharp fingernails across a blackboard. The impact was instant. The moment I got of the cab, I was literally crying. Even though it was my right eye that I hurt, it stung soooooo badly that I couldn’t open my left either. And so for the next 10 mins or so, I stood at the taxi stand looking like a possessed idiot (or someone who was dumped by bf just before I got off the cab), bending to and fro, covering my eyes and crying.

When I could finally open my eyes, my right was a blur and it continued to sting so bad that I keep having these little crying episodes every half hr or so… whilst rushing my reports at work. My vision was a total blur and I thought I would be blinded. A quick check against the mirror revealed no visible scratches or tear.

Tried looking for doctors during lunch but they were closed for that hour as well. By the time I could finally work to it, it was past 11.45pm – when I managed to finish all my work and leave for the day.

Grabbed a cab down to Mount Alvernia 24-hr clinic, waited for another hr before it was my turn. The doc dyed by right eyeball with a yellow dye and could see no visible scratches as well. But it was certain that there were abrasions though. So I put on some eye cream (to prevent bacteria infection) and wore an eye pad for the next 24 hours.

After some rest over a period of few days (yes, I still went back to work as the MC was only or a day), my eyesight finally recovered. Phew! What a scare.

Come to think of it. I tend to hold taxi receipts a little further away from me after this incident.
